I had a dream of America
It was a place of freedom
A place where we are all
Children of God
A place of inalienable rights for all
A place of the huddled masses
A place that welcomed the poor
A place that welcomed the weak
A place that valued community
A place where the welfare of others
Was the concern of everyone
A place that cared for its neighbors
Even though they were different from us
A place that the wealthy and powerful
Supported with love for the weak
A place where human well-being
Mattered more than personal wealth
It was a shining mountain top
That welcomed everyone
To the table of justice
To the table of love
I had a dream of America
It was a dream about love
It was a dream for all
It was a beautiful dream
But my dream has been dashed
By personal greed and personal power
By failure to see the value of others
By failure to value the least and the lost
I had a dream of America
But only a dream
It will be a coming truth
But only when we get to heaven
